Green in Govan: Govan-Partick Bridge, Govan Fair
Newsletter #32 - 1 million journeys across the new bridge, the Govan Fair is this Friday, good news story on housing acquisition, a shout out to Nae Trash Glasgow
Govan-Partick Bridge
It’s not even been a year since Govan’s shiny new bridge connecting central Govan with the north side of the river swivelled into place and opened its gates to the public, and latest figures from the council show that it is just as popular as we thought. Since opening, the bridge has had over 1 million trips made across it. Specifically 820,000 pedestrian trips over and 185,000 bike trips being made. With the shop units at Water Row due to open soon I’m hopeful that the 2 million trips mark will be seen in a shorter period of time.
The number I’m really astounded by is that approximately 18.4% of journeys are being made across the bridge by bike. That’s roughly 500 bike trips over the bridge every day and they’re definitely not all me. If nothing else, it shows a consistent demand for cycle infrastructure on the Govan side of the bridge which will hopefully be provided through the Connecting Greater Govan project that we’re expected the next stage of in the late summer/early autumn.
While I’m on the bridge though, I’m hoping for a date for the hearing on renaming the bridge in honour of Mary Barbour very soon following Govan Community Council’s petition on the change. I’ll provide a full update on this when the hearing is called but here’s the last press coverage of it for now.
Govan Fair - this Friday
Govan Fair week is always one of the most exciting in my calendar and it’s finally here! This Friday night is the fair and it’s open to everyone! If you’ve not come across it before - you can learn more here on their facebook page.
The fair starts at 6pm on Friday at the Pearce Institute where we will see the crowning of this years Govan Fair Queen, Olivia Dickson from Bun Sgoil Ghàidhlig Bhaile a’ Ghobhainn (Govan Gàidhlig Primary School), this year presented by local comedian Paul Black.
After the crowning the parade begins it’s procession, starting from Fairley Street in Ibrox before heading down Copland Road, Summertown Road, Orkney Street then all the way along Govan Road, Drive Road before finishing at Elder Park on Langlands Road so everyone can enjoy the shows in the park.
It’s always a blast but keep your fingers crossed that the sun comes out!
Housing Emergency
Here’s a small good news story for you. Long time readers will remember me talking about 2 large houses in Ibrox next door to each other being acquired by Linthouse Housing Association with support from the Council and the Scottish Government. These houses were specifically to help house large families who were on the waiting list for an unbelievably long time.
Well, one of the homes is finished and occupied now. The resident has spoken with the papers about their new home after 16 years on the waiting list which you can get with the button below.
