Green in Govan: 20 mph, Bees Visit
Newsletter #33 - 20 mph coming later this year, visit to meet Ed and his Bees!
Moving to 20 miles per hour!
A fair few months ago, I wrote about the council’s plans to move most of our urban streets down to 20 miles per hours and we’ve had an update through committee this week so here’s all the details!
The proposal is based in research and experience that shows reducing these limits reduces speeds on the roads. This in turn improves road safety and supports healthier mobility options. Options like making walking, wheeling and cycling for local transport.
Across the city: 3700 streets will be reduced to 20mph; 650 streets will stay at 30mph and about 1300 streets will stay at their current limit of 20mph. The rollout is taking place in stages with Govan going in the first stage. We’re expecting that this will be by the end of this year but I’ll write again when we’ve got an actual start date.
From my reading of the map - here’s the residential streets that will stay at 30mph in the Govan ward with everywhere else either at 20mph already or moving down to 20 mph (the list of what will be 20mph is way too long to write).
All of Tradeston and Kingston (except from Riverview Drive, Gardens and Place)

Bellahouston Park Bees
Yesterday afternoon, I joined my neighbouring Green
for a visit with Ed of Ed’s Bees to see his hives beside the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Bellahouston Park.Although a few of the bees weren’t big fans of me, it was a really interesting experience seeing how Ed cares for the hives, from preventing swarms, caring for the Queen and gathering fresh local honey at the end of the season. Great to see the hives up close and get feedback from an expert on insect welfare on the council’s progress on improving biodiversity.
Crucially, over the last 20 years, we’ve seen a decline in insect population of upto 76% which we know impacts crop pollination, animal life and as part of our ecosystem keeps the planet ticking. You can read more about the council’s biodiversity plans by following this link.
